In March, government authorities and agencies, along with security printing companies and technology providers, gathered in Milan, Italy for Intergraf Currency+Identity 2025. By providing an open platform for an exchange of ideas amongst innovators and users of ID and secure documents, the conference provided insights into emerging trends and challenges in the passport, ID card, and digital identity domains.

A review of the identity-focused sessions at Intergraf highlights several cross-cutting themes emerging from the sector:

Digital identity management and verification: as physical IDs extend into digital realms (eg. mobile credentials and online onboarding), ensuring trust in identity data is paramount.

The Biometrics Institute emphasised the importance of transparency, explainability and safeguards in biometric systems, noting that while biometrics can underpin identity proofing, there are other vulnerabilities that must be managed with risk-based protocols such as the Institute’s Good Practice Framework.
